I was a bit annoyed that I had an information that lots of people were looking for at the moment but the pages would not be served. Thanks for the writeup, after installing Supercache (took only a few minutes to setup, too) it works much smoother, and the only slowdown comes from external script. Thanks!

I had the desribed problems aswell, suddenly the server wasn’t responding anymore and nothing got served anymore. Besides that, there were some issues, especially with rewrite rules, that were all solved by moving back to Apache. Another reason for me to use Apache is Passenger (mod_rails).

I did use nginx for a while, but I got tired of having to run FastCGI processes to execute PHP code. And Slicehost has a lot of great articles on how to use nginx.

Another way to digg-proof your site: use a lightweight web server like nginx or lighttpd. Of course, everything in your article seems quite obvious and should be applied all the time. However, these techniques, as stated in the article, are quite general and I have used them in the past for clients to improve performance and survive huge spikes in traffic.I have applied all measures mentioned in the article and moved from ~15 requests/second to ~3000 requests/second without changing hardware. The point is, it's computer *science*. I did research, conducted tests and now I present my solutions to the world. If my site got dugg, that'd be nice, but that's really not what the article is about.

No Ariejan.net hasn’t been dugg yet.
